Owl Eyes

Shape Shifter

I had been sitting for many, many hours at my temporary Sit Spot. The mountaintop forest was peaceful and still, its branches filled with the fresh green leaves of June. I had yet to see any wildlife.

Looking up, I suddenly saw a huge wasps’ nest hanging from a tree branch, only a few paces in front of me. It was the size of a watermelon. How was it possible that I had not noticed it before? It was hanging at eye-level and I had been there for hours !

It was beautiful — a papery, egg-shaped nest, with intricate layers of grays, browns, and whites. A flock of tiny songbirds was dancing about in the branches of the wasp-nest tree, issuing raspy, grating calls. They seemed upset and were all pointing their beaks at the nest.

All at once, the top section of the nest began to slowly rotate, much like the lid of a jar unscrewing itself. Then the top stopped turning and two eyes opened up — like big, black marbles — and stared right at me!

This was no wasps’ nest — it was a barred owl ! What had looked like a jar’s lid was the owl’s head. My jaw dropped in amazement.

The owl launched from its perch into the air, spread its softly feathered wings, and flew off. I watched its silent, buoyant flight through the understory until it disappeared in the verdant curtain of the forest’s trees.
